About Us

The Emmaus Catholic Young Adult Group was started in 1996 by Fr. Ducci in Orange Park, FL. The group first met in the Wilcox house, moved to St. Catherine’s, and then due to the group’s growth and mission ultimately to Assumption Catholic Church. We chose the name “Emmaus” because of the passage in the book of Luke 24:13-35. We love this passage because it deals with the Lord opening the eyes of those who are blind to the truth. The two men’s minds are opened to the Truth when Jesus teaches them about Himself starting from the Old Testament to His death on the Cross to His Resurrection. Afterwards the two men recognize who Jesus is when He gives them the Eucharist i.e. His very Body and Blood in Communion. Our group’s mission is to open the hearts and minds of young adults to Jesus in order to live a holy life. We seek to proclaim the Gospel, which includes all of the Church’s Teachings. We do this by having guest speaker’s talk about the faith, Bible studies, Mass and Adoration, worship music, retreats, sports, and more. We believe in building a strong community of Catholic young adults whose goal is to change lives and live lives of holiness for Christ.

"Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" Luke 24:32.

Advent Concert: Bart Price and The Pillars of Joy

Greetings everyone,

Start this Advent season off on the right note!!! On Saturday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m. Assumption Catholic Church will be hosting a very special evening of meditation and reflection on Advent. There will be exposition of the Blessed Sacrament along with melodious music, and meditations from Bart Price and The Pillars of Joy. The Pillars will be playing all new songs so come out and enjoy. Please join us for this wonderful evening. http://www.myspace.com/bartprice

The Pillars of Joy need your help. This will be the first time doing this at that parish. This will be a test for our community particularly the young adults in the community. You see Fr Fred has been gracious enough to open up his parish for the evening, and there is doubt that people
would show up for something like this at this time of year.

I have communicated with Deacon John at Assumption and I assured him that our community enjoys such evenings and that it should be well attended. If it goes well this could open the doors for other similar events to take place not only at assumption but other churches in our
diocese.

Besides JESUS will be in the house, I mean church!!

Please spread the word.
Peace and blessings
Sean

Tues Movie Update - Father of Mercy

This Tuesday we will not be watching the Black Robe because I could not get the movie in time from blockbuster so it must be God's Will. Instead we will watch Father of Mercy: The True Story of Venerable Don Carlo Gnocchi. I recently got this movie from the Catholic Bookstore.
Movie will start at 7:00 because it is a longer movie.

Call me if you need directions. 307-0824 or john6bb@yahoo.com
Synopsis: A powerful epic film on the life of Fr. Carlo Gnocchi, an Italian priest who labored heroically to minister to the wounded and dying soldiers during World War II, and to victims of the war on the home front. While teaching students at the Gonzaga Institute in Milan, Fr. Gnocchi volunteered to be the military chaplain on the war front. After witnessing the horrors of the war, helping many suffering soldiers, and miraculously escaping death, he returned to start a foundation for the many children who were victims of the war. Starring Daniele Liotti (St. Anthony), this film tells of Don Gnocchi’s inspiring work with the students, the soldiers, and the children. His great legacy lives on today in the Don Carlo Gnocchi Foundation that provides medical care for thousands of patients in over 75 hospitals and clinics in Europe.

Sat- Bart Price and the Pillars of Joy Concert

Hello everyone,

The The Pillars of Joy will be playing an outdoor concert at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic church this Saturday, Oct. 31. The concert will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. Santa Maria del Mar is south of St. Augustine Beach, in Flagler Beach, about a block from the ocean, just north of the Flagler Beach pier. Click the following for a Mapquest link with directions to the church: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Flagler+Beach&state=fl&address=801+N.+Central+Ave.&zipcode=32136#

There will be a festival going on all day at the church, so come out for a good time and music. Afterward, we can all get together and do something in the later afternoon and evening. Should be a fine time.

For those unfamiliar with the music of The Pillars of Joy, you can check us out at http://www.myspace.com/bartprice. There, you can listen to music clips from our last-released album and see upcoming concert information -- particularly, Dec. 5 at Assumption parish and Dec. 26 at the gazebo in St. Augustine. We have written a lot of new music, which we will be playing Saturday and in upcoming shows. We plan to add more concert dates to the web site in the upcoming months, so be on the lookout.

God bless you,
Bart

Sat Night -Spooktacular - Jacksonville Zoo

Come out to the Zoo on Saturday Night and see the scarry animals for the Spooktacular! You can either meet me there at 6:30 (at the entrance) or meet me in the Christ the King main parking lot (back near the gym) at 5pm. We will leave Christ the King at 5:30. I want to allow enough time to get there and get parked. Based on previous years, parking is always an issue, so if you are going to meet us at the zoo, I would recommend getting there by 6 to leave time to find a spot to park and time to walk to the entrance. Each night, the zoo stops the activities at 10pm, but it will take an extra half-hour to get back out of the zoo; for those carpooling from Christ the King, plan on us getting back there around 10pm. The ticket price is $9. http://www.jaxzoo.org/spooktacular.asp

If anyone has any questions, you can either reply to birdgirl1123@gmail.com or call me on my cell at 477-2908.

Have a blessed week! Yvette

Sunday - Clam Chowder Fun in St. Aug

Hi Friends, Here is a tasty way to spend that extra hour we get this Sunday...the Great Chowder Debate at the Conch House in St. Augustine! The event's website is:http://www.conch-house.com/chowdeb.htm
Basically, lots of restaurants make different kinds of chowder and you can buy little samples for 50 cents, then vote for the one you like the best. It starts at 12:30 and I hear it can get kind of crowded, so I think the earlier you arrive the better. Everyone is welcome to meet at my house at around 1:00 to drive over together, or just meet up at the Conch House.

Day of Fun in St. Augustine - Rustic Altar Mass

Hello Everyone! We have a big day of fellowship, worship, education, and service scheduled for October 24th in St. Augustine. The highlight of which will be an outdoor Mass at the Rustic Altar at the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche. Let's make this as big as we can get it! Invite your friends, and come fellowship with us. You don’t have to belong to Emmaus to come!

One of the great things we were able to do was reserve a portion of the courtyard outside the Basilica on the corner of St. George st. and Cathedral Place to use as a "Home Base" of sorts where we can rest, fellowship, regroup, etc... This makes it possible for us to easily stay in touch throughout the day, venture out on our own to explore, and go to the various events together too. You can meet there 15-30 minutes early if you want to go with the group to any of the events. You are free to go on your own of course.

Schedule of Events:
1. Meet at 9:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manadrin to Carpool. We will leave St. Joseph’s at 9:15am on the dot. Or you can meet at our Home Base (listed above) at 9:45am to meet people and go to the first event below.

2. 10 a.m. the Sisters of St. Joseph begin offering tours of the Father Miguel O'Reilly House. You can get more information about it here: http://www.oreillyhouse.org/ . They are expecting people from our group to start arriving at 10 and will be ready for us. The house will be open until 2:30 p.m., but our other activities mean we need to do this one early.

3. 11 a.m. we are getting a tour of the Basilica. You can walk it anytime, of course, but there is a wedding there later in the day, so be sure to take advantage of the scheduled tour to get the most of the experience.

4. 12 p.m. we will go somewhere not too expensive for lunch.

5. 1 p.m. we will be meeting in the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche for a Scriptural Rosary. If you would like to get the book we will be using you can find them at Queen of Angels book store in Jacksonville (11018 Old Saint Augustine Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257-1080, (904) 288-0062) or the shrine shop in St. Aug.

6. 2 p.m. is the big event, an outdoor Mass at the Rustic Altar on the grounds of the Shrine. The altar is placed on the spot where we believe the first Mass ever in North America was celebrated. Fr. Andy Blaszkowski will be our priest. Should it rain, we will continue the Mass inside the Shrine. If we all invite the young adults we know and get a big enough crowd there (+50) we can fall back to the church to finish the Mass, as we have reserved it just in case.

7. Immediately following Mass, at 3 p.m. we have a tour of the grounds scheduled. As soon as the tour is over we will be getting a group together to pray the Seven Sorrows of Mary on the path of the Shrine.

8. 4 p.m. For our service project we will be fundraising for our Catholic Radio stations, WQOP and WZNZ. I will have Tom's recorder to take PSA's, testimonies, and the like. Pledge forms will be on hand for anyone desiring to make a pledge of support.

9. 5 p.m. In the evening we will have a beach/dinner party .

Things to bring: Bring Warm clothing and clothing to play volleyball in! Bring some cash for food and in case you want to by something in St. Aug.

In Christ,
Emmaus Core Team(Sean, Jennifer, Joe, Liz, Jeff)- Jeff

Sat 9/26 -Eucharistic Procession for Life

Emmaus Members,

This Saturday, tomorrow morning, there will be a Eucharistic Procession for Life. We, Emmaus, have 10 spots reserved for us in the procession. Only 200 can be in the actual procession; however, anyone can come for the Mass with the Bishop and the Rosary.

We will walk from Assumption to the Planned Parenthood on Beach Blvd. This is part of the kick off for the 40 days for Life. It is a good opportunity for you to pray for an end to abortion, especially in Jax. Let us flood heaven with our prayers and sacrifices.

If you would like to be in the procession e-mail Dan Mull at aqualaterischristi@gmail.com.

Time: Those in the procession will need to go to a table at the back of Assumption church by at least 7:45 AM to pick up a name tag and go to their seats. At 7:45, any unclaimed spots will be filled by any subs we have and (if necessary) anyone else we find who is willing to walk.

Where: Start at Assumption Parish and walk to the Planned Parenthood on Beach Blvd.

God Bless! Now is the time to stand for Christ and Life!

How do you really become one? These questions and more will be discussed by the Shields family. So come out this Thursday and learn about the great sacrament of Marriage and the grace that is given in it. Maybe you will find out if you are called to marriage or not. Who knows? So come out and see.

Jones plays young French peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who sees a vision of a "beautiful lady" near her home in Lourdes in 1858. Based on the novel of the same name by Franz Werfel, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE explores Bernadette's trials and tribulations from her impoverished family to her difficulties at school to the derision her visions bring upon her and at last to her affliction with bone-marrow cancer. Under the incisive eye of director Henry King, the film is seen through Bernadette's perspective but at the same time focuses upon the effect that Bernadette has upon her family, her champions, and her detractors. The acting is excellent, and no detail has gone untouched in the art direction, costumes, and cinematography. Best of all, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE stands among a rare group of Hollywood films in which visual integrity is matched step for step with thematic zeal.

Facing the Giants - Movie Night

This Tuesday Movie night we will be watching Facing the Giants. It is a movie about football and faith. We will start the movie at 7:30pm. Call me at 307-0824 if you need directions.

Synopsis: This inspirational drama from award-winning producers Alex and Stephen Kendrick combines faith and football in the tale of high school coach Grant Taylor (Alex Kendrick), who rises above failure to create a winning spirit on the field. Taylor faces a losing team, a failing marriage and the possibility of being fired. At the end of his rope, he puts his life in God's hands and, in doing so, finds a stronger purpose and, ultimately, salvation.
